Tottenham transfer news: Fresh update emerges on potential Aston Villa deal

Journalist Paul Brown doesn't expect Tottenham to try and sign Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins whilst Harry Kane is still at the club.

What's the latest news with Watkins?

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Nuno Espirito Santo is keen on adding to his strike force with the addition of Watkins.

The Villa frontman is yet to hit the ground running this season, but marked his debut top-flight campaign with 14 goals and five assists, including a memorable hat-trick against Liverpool.

Watkins's struggles might be due to the arrival of Danny Ings, with the former Brentford man possibly still adapting to Dean Smith's recent change in formation.

However, Fichajes believe that Tottenham see Watkins as a long-term replacement to Kane, who's got less than three years left on his current deal and could still leave the club next summer despite his ongoing transfer saga with Manchester City coming to an end just before the window closed.

But Brown would be surprised to see the north London outfit make a move for Watkins, rated at £28.8m by Transfermarkt, whilst the England captain is still at the club.

What did Brown say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "The two problems with that are why would Villa sell, and I don't see Spurs buying a striker whilst Kane is still there at the moment."

Do Tottenham need Watkins right now?

Having someone with the quality and versatility of Watkins in his squad right now would undoubtedly be a massive help to Nuno Espirito Santo.

Even when Tottenham have a fully fit squad, Santo technically has just five attacking players at his disposal, one of which being 20-year-old Bryan Gil, who's yet to start in the Premier League.

Therefore, Watkins would be a fine addition for the club. His goal record is an impressive one, not to mention he's only 25 and has already proven himself as more than good enough to score goals against the best teams in the land.

Did Tottenham Hotspur sign Moussa Sissoko on transfer deadline day in 2016?

But considering Villa signed him for just £28m 12 months ago, were they to sell him, they'd surely be looking for at least around the £45-50m mark, which would be up there with Tottenham's most expensive transfers.

With that in mind, it's highly unlikely that Watkins ends up becoming a Spurs player any time soon.
