Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece feels that Aston Villa winger Trezeguet could leave the club on loan in the next transfer window.

What's the latest news on Trezeguet?

The 27-year-old made 21 top-flight appearances last season, scoring two goals and providing an assist, but his campaign was brought to a premature end when he suffered a serious knee injury in April.

This has kept him out of action ever since, and he is not expected to return to the squad until the back end of the year, or even the start of 2022.

What has Preece said about Trezeguet's future at Villa?

Villa added two wingers to their ranks in the summer as they brought in Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey from Norwich and Bayer Leverkusen, respectively.

This means that competition for places on the flanks at Villa Park is fiercer than ever, and Trezeguet may have his work cut out getting back into the team after a lengthy lay-off.

With this in mind, Preece feels that the 47-cap international, who Dean Smith signed for £8.5m in 2019, could move away from the club on a temporary basis in January so that he can get back up to speed by playing regularly elsewhere.

Preece told GIVEMESPORT: “In terms of wingers, I think Trezeguet will be back in the Christmas period/New Year. We’ll see where he’s at. He could have a loan spell I reckon in January, get him some minutes before the season ends.”

Will any other Villa wingers be fearing for their place in the squad?

With Trezeguet currently injured, it is unclear as to where he currently stands in the pecking order at Villa. However, there are a couple of other wide men who seem to be clearly out of favour at the moment.

With Smith switching to a 3-5-2 formation in recent weeks, it has been a difficult time for the side's wingers as they have had to largely watch on from the sidelines.

Bertrand Traore has not started a single league match this term, and has been restricted to just 53 minutes in total when he has played. Meanwhile, Anwar El Ghazi started the first three Premier League fixtures but has not featured at all in the last four. He was also linked with a transfer in the summer, suggesting that it may have already crossed his mind that he should move on from Villa.

If things don't change soon for Traore and El Ghazi, they could be looking towards the exit door in January.
