In last season's Europa League final in Gdansk, both goalkeepers stepped up to take penalties in the shootout.

Villarreal's Geronimo Rulli converted his spot kick, which meant Manchester United's David de Gea had to score to keep his side in the game - something the Spaniard was infamously unable to do.

The sight of a goalkeeper stepping up to take a penalty is one that fills football fans with excitement, as you just never quite know what is going to happen next.

That was certainly the case when Joe Hart decided to accept the burden of taking a spot kick for Manchester City in a pre-season friendly shootout versus AS Roma in 2015.

The two European sides met in that year's International Champions Cup in Melbourne and they couldn't be separated after a 2-2 draw in normal time.

So it went to penalties and City were on the cusp of defeat after Aleksandar Kolarov missed the team's second spot kick.

The Serbian's miss meant that the English outfit had to score their fifth and final penalty, which Hart believed he could do.

And anyone who doubted him at the time was proven to be a complete fool a few seconds later.

The 34-year-old looked cool as a cucumber as he thumped the ball into the roof of the net, leaving his opposing number with no chance whatsoever of saving it.

Take a look at Hart's magnificent penalty here...

"He took a goal kick from the penalty spot," one fan wrote in the comment section and that assessment is bang on the money.

After accurately whacking the ball into the back of the net at a frightening speed, Hart saved Roma's next two penalties from Seydou Doumbia and Seydou Keita to secure a victory for City.

Not a bad night's work, eh?

City were sadly unable to win the Australian edition of the International Champions Cup in 2015, though.
