2009 Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button has predicted that Valtteri Bottas will find it a bit 'weird' moving from a top team in Mercedes to a lower-down team in Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season.

It was confirmed in September that the Finn would be switching the Silver Arrows for an Alfa for next season with him being handed a multi-year contract in the process.

The expectancy, then, is for the former Williams man to help lead his new team in the new era F1 is about to enter from next season to try and help them up the grid and challenge at the right end, though Button has suggested he will find the adaptation period he has to go through as 'weird.'

“Yeah, it’s always a weird one, when you go from a top team to a not-so-top team,” Button said in an interview with Luxury London. “It is a long-term contract for him, so it’s the first time he’s ever had that in F1.

“But still, it’s a tough pill to swallow. Now he’s got to get his head down and develop that team around him and hope they have the funding to move forward.”

It's certainly going to be fascinating watching Bottas get to grips with his new team, particularly after running near the front for the last few seasons at the wheel of an all-conquering Mercedes car.

It's a new challenge for him, and hopefully he'll be able to rise to it and show exactly why Alfa have been so happy to get an agreement with him over the line.
