Journalist Luke Hatfield reckons that John McGinn would start over Scott McTominay and Fred in Manchester United's midfield.

The Scottish international has been one of the most underrated midfielder players in the Premier League since Villa got promoted two years ago, missing only 12 league games during that period.

What's the latest news with McGinn?

Discussing United's problems following their recent slump across all competitions, ex-Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor told talkSPORT that McGinn is better than anything they've currently got at Old Trafford.

He said: "I say it every time I see him play but when Fred gets on the ball, it's just sloppy passes and he'll give it away. Even when he's in there to win the ball he doesn’t do that. I just don't see why he's in that team.

"There's a lot of central midfielders who would walk into that Manchester United team. John McGinn, walks into that midfield."

This season alone, McGinn (6.89) comfortably has a better average WhoScored rating than the United pair, with McTominay at 6.71 and Fred slightly higher at 6.72.

The Villa midfielder has made another bright start to the season, scoring once, a stunning volley at Watford on the opening day, in six appearances, to help the Midlands outfit sit in the top-half heading into the latest international break, despite their 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Sunday.

McGinn's form over recent seasons saw him linked with an audacious move to United's north west rivals Liverpool in the summer as a potential Gini Wijnaldum replacement, with Jurgen Klopp seeing first-hand what he's capable of during Villa's 7-2 victory over his team last term.

Hatfield was asked about Agbonlahor's comments about Manchester United and agreed about McGinn.

What did Hatfield say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "As opposed to the McGinn thing, I would have McGinn over both of the two central midfielders, not including Pogba and Fernandes at Manchester United."

Is McGinn good enough for Manchester United?

It's almost funny to talk about someone that was playing for Hibernian three years ago as good enough to play for the Red Devils. Many would say that's more down to the lack of quality in United's midfield, but that wouldn't be doing justice to McGinn, who's been one of the most consistent performers outside the top-six in the last two years.

United will obviously have more high-profile targets than McGinn, but it wouldn't be wrong to say that bringing him in would improve their midfield department.
