Alan Shearer is one of the greatest strikers England have ever produced.

The Newcastle legend is still the Premier League's record goalscorer with 260 to his name and it's hard to see anyone surpassing that tally for quite some time yet.

Shearer was also prolific on international duty, netting 30 goals in 63 appearances - including eight in 14 matches at major tournaments.

It's real shame that the 51-year-old opted to retire from the England national team after the conclusion of Euro 2000.

Shearer was still somewhere close to his prime when he called time on his career with the Three Lions.

But despite departing the international scene prematurely, Shearer still provided a number of classic moments in an England shirt.

There was his famous brace against Holland in a 4-1 victory at Euro 1996, as well as a semi-final strike versus Germany at the same tournament.

And one snippet of goalscoring genius from Shearer for England remains underrated by the masses to this very day.

When England played Georgia in a World Cup qualifier in April 1997, the former Southampton and Blackburn Rovers man scored an incredible indirect free-kick inside the penalty area.

Shearer had the tiniest portion of the goal to aim at, but managed to send the ball flying into the small amount of empty space on the far side after Teddy Sherigham's clever lay-off.

The sheer power and eagle-eyed accuracy from Shearer was simply sublime.

Georgia's array of players on the line didn't stand a chance of preventing the goal and we're slightly surprised the ball didn't burst the net, such was the velocity of Shearer's shot.

His right foot really was a lethal weapon and goalkeepers rarely stood a chance when he directed the ball on target from either open play or a set-piece situation.

A true legend of the game.
