Gary Cahill has put Chelsea and Arsenal on alert to his services, Metro claims, with the top priority defender target having a dig at his teammates after Bolton lost 0-2 to Sunderland at the weekend.

Cahill has starred for Bolton over the last two seasons, and with the England international in the last year of his contract with Rovers, the club are doing all they can to keep him on board.

But after the side’s poor display so far this season, Arsenal and Chelsea will be boosted by the news that Cahill is angry with having to carry his teammates this season.

“A few of the lads, myself included, need to have a look and question themselves over whether they are doing enough,’ Cahill said.

“You can maybe afford to carry one player but you cannot afford to carry a handful and it has been different players in different games.

“When you are under pressure, there is only so much you can head out and defend.

“It is difficult because I was out there (against Sunderland) thinking, ‘Why are we under so much pressure?’ We were defending all the time. We have to sort it out.”

Chelsea and Arsenal had both reportedly made enquiries for Cahill, and now the sides are deciding whether to make a play for the £17 million rated star in January, or take the risk and wait it out until his contract runs out and he can move for free.

Tottenham were also said to be interested in Cahill, but with Arsenal and Chelsea both able to offer Champions League experience straight away, the 25-year-old would no doubt prefer a move to either club.
