Today is a pretty big day for Newcastle United, with a Saudi-backed consortium finalising a deal to purchase the club, but things could have turned out very differently for the Premier League outfit.

Mike Ashley was the previous owner of Newcastle United, having purchased the club in 2007, but if reports are to be believed, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon wanted to buy the club at one stage.

In February 2014, a report from Winner Sports indicated that Vince McMahon was considering a bid to take full ownership of Newcastle United, with The Independent writing:

World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon has been linked with a shock move to take full ownership of Premier League side Newcastle United in what would be one of the biggest shocks to world football ever seen.

McMahon is reported to be interested in purchasing the club from current owner Mike Ashley, and a bid could materialize in the not too distant future with the Londoner reportedly keen to sell the Magpies

Vince McMahon didn't take his reported consideration buying Newcastle United too far, and no reputable sources have claimed that the WWE Chairman made an offer to purchase the club.

The new owners of Newcastle are believed to have assets of around £300billion, which will excite fans of the Geordie outfit, while Vince McMahon has a net worth of just over £1.5billion.

While Vince McMahon didn't end up purchasing the English club, he is set to take WWE back to England next month, with the promotion announcing an eight-show tour of the UK for November.

Vince McMahon has been in the news lately, with former WWE star Lana speaking about how the WWE Chairman personally called her after she changed up her hair colour without permission.
