Celtic news: "Sad" and "embarrassing" situation has developed at Celtic Park - revealed

Journalist Stuart Hodge has reacted to Celtic's recent Europa League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen by saying that the Hoops shouldn't lose 4-0 at home to anyone, slamming the result as "embarrassing".

Celtic matched their German opponents for long periods but conceded twice in either half to suffer their heaviest defeat for more than four years and left their Europa League hopes in tatters.

What happened against Bayer Leverkusen?

Ange Postecoglou's side desperately needed a response following their defeat to Real Betis on the opening night of group stage matches.

The Australian got that exact response during the early stages when Celtic flew out of the blocks, the only thing being they somehow failed to make their superiority count when they arguably should have been out of sight by the time the Bundesliga outfit broke the deadlock.

Celtic continued to create chances, but kept missing them, whilst Leverkusen were doing the exact opposite and found themselves two goals to the good at half-time despite being largely dominated.

The second-half was a familiar story and the German side took full advantage by scoring twice more to complete a comprehensive rout, whilst the Hoops were made to look back on a flurry of more missed opportunities, with Kyogo Furuhashi the main guilty party for Postecoglou's team.

Despite some encouraging parts of their performance, Hodge said that the result wasn't acceptable.

What did Hodge say?

When asked his thoughts on the scoreline, Hodge told GIVEMESPORT: "It's really sad what's happened, and I don't really know how you reverse it.

"And the fact that Celtic are getting thumped and for all that Leverkusen will probably run Bayern Munich close in the Bundesliga this year, the fact that Celtic are getting thumped by anyone.

"It was Sparta Prague five minutes ago. The fact that they're getting beaten by that scoreline by anyone at Celtic Park is embarrassing and disappointing. "

What next for Celtic?

Celtic bounced back from the Leverkusen defeat in the perfect way by collecting their first Scottish Premiership away victory under Postecoglou on Sunday, but their lack of consistency is proving a serious problem this season.

With Celtic facing a pre-Christmas exit from Europe once again and their title hopes already in tatters, the next few months could already prove crucial in Postecoglou's reign.
