Journalist Liam Kennedy reckons that Newcastle's owners are thinking both short and long-term and believes they could turn the North East giants into a £1bn football club.

The Mapgies have been taken over in a £300m deal by a Saudi Arabian-led consortium, which has ended Mike Ashley's ownership after 14 years.

What's the latest takeover news with Newcastle?

It's been a whirlwind decade or so for the long-suffering Newcastle fans, but there looks to finally be some light at the end of the tunnel.

With the takeover now confirmed, it'll surely be a mixture of relief and excitement for the St James' Park faithful, who've been protesting against Ashley for a number of years, the latest coming in their draw with Leeds last month.

Steve Bruce's side currently sit 19th in the Premier League having picked up just three points from their opening seven matches and missed the chance to climb out of the bottom-three following a 2-1 defeat at Wolves before the international break.

Their winless start has cranked up the pressure on Bruce and he's now the favourite manager to be sacked in the Premier League.

It's unclear whether the expected takeover will affect Bruce's position in the dugout, but Kennedy thinks that the new owners won't just be thinking about the near-future.

What did Kennedy say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Not all of its short-term, some of its medium and long. But the idea is there that Newcastle would grow with the city.

"I think that you've got to look at Newcastle into an investment opportunity, it's not difficult to see how you could turn Newcastle from a £300m football club to nearly £1bn one, because you've seen that at other football clubs."

Who are PIF?

Public Investment Fund are a Saudi Arabian-led business that are amongst the wealthiest in the world and will make Newcastle the richest club on the planet once the takeover goes through.

According to the Daily Mail, they're worth an astonishing £320bn, which is 10 times bigger than Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour, whose money has seen them dominate English football in recent years.

With their incredible value topping any of their Premier League rivals, it's an extremely exciting prospect for everyone associated with Newcastle, who'll no doubt be counting down the days until the January window opens following years of Ashley failing to spend substantial amounts on players.
