No matter how wrong some things may seem, the cynical nature of being a football fan leads us to predict the worst.
Indeed, when Frank Lampard lined up for Manchester City - a club he clearly did not want to play for - against Chelsea back in September 2014, it seemed inevitable he would score. As strange a sight as it was, football fans have been here before.
While the Stamford Bridge legend (who had seemed to be heading for New York City FC after calling time on his Chelsea career) did not celebrate, it was he who ended Jose Mourinho's perfect winning streak up until that point, though they would go on to win the Premier League.
The goal itself was typical Lampard.
Arriving late in the box, the midfielder saw a ball from James Milner cushioned across to him and, without thinking, crafted a wonderful one-touch finish into the ground, using the bounce to beat Thibaut Courtois.
The look on his face after realising what he had done told the whole story. His natural instincts, the very tools that made him such a legend in Chelsea blue, had come back to bite his former club.
Clearly an emotional day for the player, it also seemed somewhat harsh to drag him out in front of the Sky Sports cameras after the game. After all, he clearly didn't want to rub Chelsea's noses in the fact he had just scored against them, so to make him talk about it looked fairly ruthless.
Still, it did lead to quite the post-match interview.
In all fairness, the situation could have been a lot more awkward but Lampard - like a true professional - spoke of merely doing his job for the team who employed him.
"I'd be unprofessional if I didn't come on and do my job," he said.
"So I tried to get in the box, it's a great ball from Millie. It's a tough one for me, I had 13 amazing years with Chelsea fans, so I'm mixed with it.
"I'm obviously pleased with the team I play for got a draw."
