Emma Raducanu will play her first tournament since her historic US Open triumph this week as she bids to follow up her maiden Grand Slam success with victory at the Indian Wells Masters.

The teenager was given a wildcard for the prestigious event and has been seeded 17th by tournament organisers.

Indian Wells has often been referred to as the ‘fifth major’ and boasts the second-largest tennis stadium in the world, after New York’s Arthur Ashe.

Given the 1000 ranking points on offer, the competition regularly attracts the best players in the world and the likes of Raducanu will be keen to accumulate as many points as possible with a spot in the end of season WTA Finals at stake.

Because of her seeding, the 18-year-old was granted a first-round bye at Indian Wells and is scheduled to be in second-round action tonight.

Who is Emma Raducanu playing?

The Brit faces Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who is ranked 111th in the world but beat Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in straight sets to reach round two.

Sasnovich has formerly been ranked as high as 30th and is a prolific doubles player, having reached the semi-finals at the 2019 US Open.

Nonetheless, Raducanu is a heavy favourite and expected to progress in California, where a third-round match against Romania’s Simon Halep may await.

Halep has been cited as an idol by Raducanu and won this tournament back in 2015.
