Emmet Gates believes Liverpool could struggle to find a buyer for Mohamed Salah.

The Egypt forward's contract issues are yet to be resolved but if the Reds were to sell, there may be a lack of viable suitors in Europe.

What's the latest news involving Mohamed Salah?

Liverpool would surely be loathed to lose Salah in the near future. The 29-year-old now boasts 134 goals and 50 assists in 212 appearances for the Premier League side.

Nonetheless, they will need to resolve Salah's contract situation sooner rather than later.

The Liverpool star's current deal at Anfield is due to expire in 2023, meaning the Reds could come under pressure to cash-in at the end of the season when his contract will enter its final 18 months.

Salah reportedly wants a new contract worth between £300k and £380k per week, however that would make him the top earner at the club by a pretty staggering distance of at least £80k.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool would sanction such a deal and considering his age, it might actually be best for them to sell Salah rather than hand him a lucrative long-term contract.

What has Emmet Gates said about selling Mohamed Salah?

Journalist Gates has argued that, were Liverpool to try and sell Salah, they may actually struggle to find a buyer for the African attacker.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Gates expressed doubts over whether the likes of Barcelona could afford Salah, while he completely ruled out a move to Manchester City.

He said: "From a Liverpool perspective you'd want to make a lot of money on selling Salah but you look around the European landscape and you think 'who could afford him?'. Real Madrid want Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland, Barcelona couldn't buy Salah's cousin let alone Salah given their financial predicament.

"Would he want to return to Serie A? Who could afford him? Juventus can't. Inter can't. So you've either got Bayern, PSG or Manchester City. Liverpool would never sanction that ever, even if City came with £100m, £125m. They'd probably rather sell him for a lesser price to PSG or Bayern just to not keep him in the Premier League."

What is Mohamed Salah's position?

Salah predominantly operates as a right winger and has spent the vast majority of his career in that position. The role allows him to cut inside onto his stronger left foot, where he can either create chances for team-mates or take efforts at goal himself.

However, the former Basel and Chelsea man has played as a left winger, a central striker and a No.10 before. It's not unheard of for wingers to take up more central positions as they get older - Cristiano Ronaldo being the most notable example - and perhaps Salah could make a similar transition once he gets into his 30s.
