Journalist Stuart Hodge reckons that the Newcastle job is "perfect" for Steven Gerrard.

The 41-year-old is currently in charge of Rangers but has been strongly linked to the St James' Park role after their £300m takeover was confirmed on Thursday.

What's the current managerial situation at Newcastle?

Steve Bruce is still in charge, but he's hanging onto his job in the North East by a thread, with the Saudi Arabian owners are likely to sack him following their winless start to the Premier League campaign.

Bruce said recently in an interview with the Telegraph that he would like to be given the chance to show the new owners what he's capable of but knows that there's every possibility that he will lose his job before the Mapgies host Tottenham on Sunday in their first match of the post-Mike Ashley era.

Several high-profile names have already been mentioned in recent days, including former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, Frank Lampard and even a return to St James' Park for the popular Rafael Benitez.

But Gerrard is the youngest of that quartet and Hodge thinks that the Rangers manager would be perfect for Newcastle.

What did Hodge say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Newcastle's a big job and that's the one for me, that's the perfect vehicle for Gerrard in the Premier League is Newcastle. Because that's a big club, where pretentions of a winning mentality, they've actually won very, very little, but they're a big club with great support."

Is Gerrard the right man for Newcastle?

Gerrard has never managed in the Premier League, so it's difficult to tell just yet, but he's someone that knows the league inside out having played in it for the best part of two decades with Liverpool.

But with Gerrard surely eyeing up Jurgen Klopp's job once he eventually leaves Anfield, Newcastle might prove the perfect stepping-stone for him to eventually return to Merseyside.

With Newcastle likely to spend big on players in the coming windows in a bid to bring European football back to the club, they'll want someone with experience in Europe, something Gerrard has gained in recent seasons with Rangers.

Furthermore, Hodge mentioned about Newcastle wanting to have a winning mentality, something that Gerrard has in abundance as both a player and now a manager having led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title last term.
