Liverpool news: How Roma felt about the £36.9m they got for Mohamed Salah - Revealed

Mohamed Salah celebrates scoring for Liverpool versus Crystal Palace

Emmet Gates has claimed Roma believed Liverpool overpaid for Mohamed Salah back in 2017, but he has since proved to be a bargain for the Premier League side.

What’s the latest news involving Mohamed Salah?

The Egypt international has shot to the top of the Premier League’s scoring charts in the early stages of the season, with six goals putting him in joint-first place alongside Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

It has lead to claims that, based on current form at least, Salah is the best player in world football right now and deserves greater recognition for his performances.

The 29-year-old has, after all, racked up 134 goals and 50 assists in 212 outings since signing for the Reds back in 2017.

And interestingly enough, it is now being claimed that former employers Roma actually thought they got the better end of the deal when they sold Salah four years ago.

How much did Liverpool buy Mohamed Salah for?

Liverpool spent a then-club-record fee of £36.9m to sign Salah from the Serie A giants, in a deal potentially rising to £43.9m.

However, that does indeed now look like pocket change. Salah is currently valued at £90m by Transfermarkt and in his time at Anfield, he has won both the Premier League title and the Champions League title while setting a series of incredible individual records.

Journalist Gates believes the change in view on how much the forward is worth comes down to his own transformation since moving to Merseyside.

What did Emmet Gates say about Mohamed Salah?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Gates said: “I think actually when Roma sold him they were happy with the price they got, because they actually felt Liverpool had overpaid. When you look back now and think £37m – Liverpool got a bargain. But it’s all down to Salah’s transformation in those four years.”

What is Mohamed Salah’s contract length and salary?

Salah’s Liverpool contract is due to expire in 2023 and he currently earns £200k per week.

However, with the forward now into the final 18 months of his deal, the Reds are looking to renew it

It has been reported that Salah wants his new contract to be worth between £300k and £380k per week, which would make him the top earner at Anfield by quite some distance.

Whether Liverpool would be willing to sanction such a significant salary, however, still remains to be seen.
