Arsene Wenger is 'confident' Robin van Persie will extend his stay with Arsenal beyond the current terms of his contract.

The Arsenal captain's deal expires in July 2013 and his long-term future has been the subject of increased speculation in recent weeks.

Following the respective departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in the summer, the Gunners are keen to resolve van Persie's situation as soon as possible, although negotiations are yet to officially begin.

But, when they do, Wenger expects the 28-year-old will commit himself to the north London outfit for the foreseeable future.

"He has 18 months to go and I'm confident he'll sign a new deal," the Arsenal boss told BBC Sport. "I'm always confident."

Van Persie has recently said he is content with life at the Emirates Stadium, despite Manchester City reportedly being alerted by his scintillating form this year.

The Dutch forward has netted a remarkable 30 times in his last 36 games, while he has also passed the 100-goal mark for Arsenal after seven years with the club.
