Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece has revealed that youth team coaches at Aston Villa feel that Jacob Ramsey has some similarities to former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

What's the latest news involving Jacob Ramsey?

After being a fringe player for Villa last season, Ramsey has made a significant breakthrough this term, starting five of the side's last six top-flight matches.

He has recently shone in high-profile matches against Chelsea and Manchester United, leading to a report claiming that Manchester City are keeping an eye on Ramsey's progress ahead of potentially making a move for him in the future.

The youngster is certainly shining at his boyhood club, much like a former Premier League player did, who would go on to establish himself as one of the finest midfielders England has ever produced, Lampard.

What did Preece say about Ramsey being compared to Lampard?

Lampard came through the ranks at West Ham before spending 13 trophy-laden years at Chelsea. He was known for arriving in the penalty area at just the right moment to finish off sweeping moves, and although Ramsey is yet to show that same instinct at senior level, Preece has stated that staff members at Villa feel that Ramsey has it in his locker.

Speaking about Ramsey to GIVEMESPORT, Preece said: “Coaches at Under-23 level have always said he’s a goal threat. He makes them ‘ghost-in’ Frank Lampard runs into the box, and hopefully he can do that in a first-team shirt now. So yeah, add goals to his game.”

Is it fair to compare Ramsey to Lampard at this stage?

It is certainly a lot of pressure to put on a 20-year-old who is still learning his trade.

Ramsey is clearly a huge prospect, but Lampard is arguably the greatest goalscoring midfielder this country has ever seen, as he scored 177 Premier League goals in his career.

By contrast, Ramsey has not found the net in his 28 top-flight appearances. That's not to say that he is not capable of providing goals from midfield for Dean Smith's men, but he has not shown that side of his game yet.

In fairness, Lampard didn't score more than seven league goals in a season during his time at West Ham, before he left the club at the age of 23. This shows that a player adding goals to their game can come with time, and Ramsey may be able to prove that his youth team coaches were right as his career progresses by scoring more regularly.
