Virgil van Dijk is arguably the best defender in the world.

The Dutchman has been a focal point of a Liverpool side that have been one of  Europe's best teams in the past few years.

He was playing at an extraordinary level before suffering a serious injury against Everton last year.

The Liverpool man returned to action in pre-season and he's already playing at a very high level once again.

Van Dijk has been so good since joining Liverpool that Vincent Kompany, who was a brilliant defender himself, named Van Dijk as the Premier League's greatest ever centre-back last year.

Squawka have now given their thoughts on the 15 greatest centre-backs in England's top tier since 1992.

So Squawka have named Terry as the greatest centre-back in Premier League history.

He certainly had an amazing career.

Terry was a colossus for Chelsea, playing 492 times in the league and helping them to five Premier League trophies.

He just ousts Ferdinand to top spot, who also enjoyed great success at Manchester United.

Rounding out the top three is Campbell, who played at a very high level for Tottenham and Arsenal.

Vidic, perhaps surprisingly, finds himself in fifth, behind Adams.

It could be argued that the Serb is the best centre-back in Premier League history but doesn't come close to topping Squawka's list.

The only active player on the list is Van Dijk. The Dutchman is only 30 and, should he continue to perform at a very high level for a few more years, could climb up the list further.

Elsewhere, it seems harsh to put Kompany as low down as 10th.

The Belgian is a legend at Manchester City having led them to four Premier League titles.

Meanwhile Stam, Carragher and King all also make the top 15.
