Katie McCabe, Lauren Hemp: 6 standout players from the WSL this week

GMSw pick the six standout players from this weekend's Women's Super League action

It was another exciting weekend in the Women’s Super League, kicking-off with a derby clash between Manchester United and Manchester City.

The highly-anticipated derby ended a 2-2 draw, with three goals coming in a frantic seven minutes. Elsewhere, Arsenal and Reading comfortably beat Everton and Aston Villa 3-0 respectively, while Chelsea struck late to get past Leicester 2-0.

Brighton edged past Tottenham Hotspur 2-1, with West Ham drawing 1-1 against Birmingham City.

GiveMeSport Women has picked one key player from each of the six WSL fixtures.

Louise Quinn (West Ham 1 – 1 Birmingham City)

Louise Quinn has been Birmingham City’s stand-out player so far this season. She proved to be pivotal again as the Blues earned their first point of the campaign with a hard-earned draw against West Ham.

Quinn tapped home Birmingham’s equaliser in the 67th minute, before marshalling the defence to ensure West Ham could not hit back with a winner.

She will need to keep up her impressive form if Birmingham are to secure WSL survival this season.

Katie McCabe (Arsenal 3 – 0 Everton)

McCabe played at left-back for Arsenal against Everton, but as usual, was as important for the Gunners in attack as in defence.

She created a range of chances before hitting the back of the net herself, volleying a shot over the head of goalkeeper Sandy MacIver and into the Everton goal.

The Irishwoman has now scored three times and racked up three assists for Arsenal, helping her side to the top of the WSL table.

Rachel Rowe (Reading 3 – 0 Aston Villa)

Reading earned their first three points of the season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Rowe was lively all game, providing energy and drive to an out-of-form Royals side. She set-up Amalie Eikland’s opening goal, before finding the back of the net herself for Reading’s second.

Danielle Carter (Brighton & Hove Albion 2 – 1 Tottenham Hotspur)

Tottenham’s unbeaten run in the WSL finally came to an end. They were narrowly defeated 2-1 by Brighton, who held onto the victory despite a late goal from Kit Graham.

Lee Geum-min and Victoria Williams were on the scoresheet for Brighton, but Carter was just as threatening for the home side. She was unlucky not to score herself after hitting the woodwork.

Ashleigh Plumptre (Chelsea 2 – 0 Leicester City)

It may seem strange to pick a player of the match from the losing side, but Plumptre was crucial for Leicester as they prevented WSL champions Chelsea from scoring for the majority of the game.

Pernille Harder eventually broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute, before Fran Kirby doubled Chelsea’s lead in the dying moments of the match. The 2-0 result seemed somewhat unfair on a resolute Leicester side.

Plumptre was a rock at the heart of Leicester’s defence, pulling off important tackles and blocks to keep her side in the match.

Lauren Hemp (Manchester United 2 – 2 Manchester City)

Manchester City had a mammoth task on their hands after Georgia Stanway was sent off just 35 minutes into their clash against Manchester United.

City responded well, shoring up their defence and quickly taking the lead through a Khadija Shaw header. United eventually went 2-1 up, but Ellen White grabbed an equaliser with 10 minutes to go.

Although she did not get on the scoresheet, Lauren Hemp was a continuous attacking threat for City, constantly running at United’s defence. She was often causing problems for Ona Batlle, one of the best full-backs in the league.
