Leeds presenter Joe Wainman reckons that Tyler Roberts splits the Elland Road fan base.

The 22-year-old was one of the final signings made before the Marcelo Bielsa era when he joined from West Brom in 2017 and has gone on to make 91 appearances for Leeds.

What's the latest news with Roberts?

Despite this being his fourth full season in South Yorkshire, Roberts hasn't yet nailed down a regular place under Bielsa despite being heavily involved.

This season, the attacker is yet to start in the Premier League, although he's featured in all of Leeds' seven fixtures from the bench.

Roberts' lack of starts hasn't been helped by the fact he's played in several different positions, even though the majority of those have come as a centre-forward.

But Patrick Bamford's form has restricted the Welshman's minutes on the pitch and his goal return of just eight in 91 games is extremely underwhelming for a side that don't struggle to score.

Despite his lack of goals, he was rewarded with a new three-year deal in the summer and has enjoyed success on the international stage, winning 17 caps for Wales.

Wainman, though, reckons that his contract extension was seen as controversial amongst the Elland Road faithful.

What did Wainman say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "He splits the fan base. Some would say he didn't deserve his new contract, others would. But Bielsa likes him and in the games that we've played in the Premier League he has done well when he's come on the pitch.

"With Tyler, it's his first touch, first turn is good but after that, it seems to break down. But I guess that shows the performances of Rodrigo up to this point that the majority of the fans are saying 'get Tyler in there'."

Should Roberts get more of a chance?

Eight goals in more than three seasons playing in a side that score plenty is probably one of the reasons that Roberts isn't overly trusted by Bielsa to regularly start.

But as Wainman mentioned above, Rodrigo is starting most weeks despite failing to score this term and with only one victory this season, giving Roberts, valued at £5.4m, a go from the start might not be the worst idea.

In Rodrigo's defence, Leeds' only victory came against Watford before the international break, which could tempt Bielsa to stick with a winning team over bringing Roberts in for their trip to Southampton this weekend.
