An old tweet from Anthony Joshua is circulating around Twitter again following the win of heavyweight rival Tyson Fury.
The post was made back in 2017 when the Watford-born star was facing backlash from boxing fans and fellow boxers, Fury included, for delaying his unification fight with the then WBC champion Deontay Wilder or WBO champion Joseph Parker.
Fury criticised his fellow Briton by claiming that he had struggled when facing Carlos Takam, a fight which Joshua won via 10th-round TKO to retain his heavyweight titles, and he clearly didn’t take his comments lightly.
Retaliating on Twitter, AJ went directly for the Gypsy King, saying: “& @Tyson_Fury get fit you fat f***.”
This was at the time Fury had taken a hiatus from boxing due to struggles with his mental health and consequently gaining weight following his win against Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.
However, fans are now pointing out the irony behind the post after seeing the remarkable success Fury has achieved since then, whereas Joshua has arguably struggled in the ring, losing on two separate occasions to Andy Ruiz Jr and then Oleksandr Usyk.
And that's just a small sample of some of the reactions to the tweet following Saturday's fight; AJ's notifications must be getting pretty annoying by now.
Fury vs Wilder 3
Fury completed his trilogy of fights with Wilder on Saturday in Las Vegas in what has already been named one of the best heavyweight clashes of all time. The captivating clash saw both fighters knocked to the canvas at least twice, with both of Fury’s coming in round four.
The Englishman then channelled his inner Gladiator spirit, which we saw during his ring walk, and got up to dominate the next few rounds.
He then had Wilder against the ropes in the 11th round, and following a flurry of punches, it was a right hand that had his opponent floored and the referee signalling ‘game over.’
The self-proclaimed “greatest heavyweight of his era” would likely see the comedic side to Joshua’s insult, however, following a disappointing defeat to Usyk, the 31-year-old has some work to do if he wants to see a fight agreed with the unbeaten Mancunian.
