To say Pep Guardiola is a man obsessed with winning would be an understatement.

Indeed, what has been so obvious over the course of his glittering managerial career is his intensity. A micro-manager to the highest degree, the man who constructed an era-defining Barcelona team has never let up on his pursuit of what he perceives as absolute perfection.

Such is his genius, however, Guardiola doesn't want to win just any old way.

Holding his team up to the highest of standards, there have been a few run-ins with players over the years. Only recently was he spotted berating Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez for their lack of defensive work during a Champions League game in which they ran out comfortable winners.

Long before that, Raheem Sterling had invoked the ire of his manager.

Back in November 2018, Manchester City had put bitter rivals Manchester United (who, at the time, were struggling under Jose Mourinho) in a convincing 3-1 Premier League win at the Etihad Stadium.

In truth, the scoreline flattered the visitors, who were reduced to chasing shadows at the end of the game.

As supporters celebrated, Sterling seemed to take things too far in Guardiola's view.

Keeping the ball with absolute ease, the England winger teases Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini and Alexis Sanchez with the slowest stepovers you're ever likely to see.

After the game, Guardiola appeared to confront his player and vent his frustration at the disrespect.

In his post-match interview, the Spaniard would say (via The Mirror): "I like a lot when he played [but] the best way to defend a result is to keep the ball.

“He made some movements with the legs, we can avoid it but he is young, he can improve.”

Clearly, Guardiola is a man who doesn't want to see that kind of thing.
