Yan will be hoping to regain his Championship after losing the title to Aljamain Sterling back at UFC 259 in May after throwing an illegal knee to his downed opponent.
Here is everything you need to know about the Interim Bantamweight Title fight at UFC 267 on Saturday October 30th from Etihad Arena, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
Sterling was originally expected to be defending his title at the UFC 267 event against Yan in a rematch from their contest in May.
The original fight ended in what some would call controversy, as the knee thrown by Yan was clearly an illegal move, but some fans believe that Sterling ‘milked’ an injury after the blow and caused the disqualification to be called.
What didn’t help matters was that Yan was clearly winning the fight before hitting the knee, but the actual DQ that was called by the referee was the correct call, but the controversial scenes following the contest meant that fans wanted to see the rematch.
Why Is There an Interim Title Fight?
Despite the title being defended 6 months prior, the UFC opted to make the bout between Yan and Sandhagen an Interim Championship contest.
UFC President Dana White explained the reasoning behind the Interim stipulation being added to the fight during a press call. He said: “We had to do the interim title if you look at how that fight (with Sterling at UFC 259) ended?
“Yan is ready to go, Sterling doesn’t know when he going to be ready, doesn’t know when his leg is going to be healed, doesn’t know when he’s going to get the doctors’ clearance, so an interim title makes sense.”
The winner of the fight will likely go on to face Sterling at an event down the line, unless of course,7 Sterling opts to relinquish the title, in which case there will probably be a final undisputed Championship fight again between Sandhagen and Yan.
