Kenyan long-distance runner Agnes Tirop has been found dead at her home, aged 25.Tirop, a two-time bronze medallist at the World Athletics Championships, represented Kenya at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.She placed fourth in the 5,000m final, finishing in a time of 14mins 39.62secs.According to Athletics Kenya, Tirop was found dead in her home after allegedly being stabbed by her husband. Police are currently investigating the incident."We are still working to unearth more details surrounding her demise," a statement from the governing body said. "Kenya has lost a jewel who was one of the fastest-rising athletics giants on the international stage, thanks to her eye-catching performances on the track."Tirop smashed the women’s 10km world record in Germany last month, crossing the line in 30:01 to knock 28 seconds off the previous record set in 2002 by Morocco’s Asmae Leghzaoui.

After entering the senior ranks in 2015, Tirop won bronze medals at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships in the 10,000m event.

She also won the 2015 World Cross Country Championships, making history as the second-youngest medallist at the event.

After the news was shared on social media by BBC Sport, Twitter users reacted in sorrow and despair.

"A desperately sad and horrible situation," one commented. "Such a talented and incredible athlete."

Another wrote: "Terrible, terrible news. Am shocked." Tirop’s death was also described as "tragic" and "heartbreaking".

Athletics Kenya shared a message for Tirop’s friends, family and supporters. "We pray that God may grant strength to family and friends at this difficult time," it read.
