The Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield believes Wolves would be going against their usual transfer policy if they move to sign Reading midfielder John Swift.

The Premier League outfit have been linked with making a move for the 26-year-old after his exceptional start to the season in the Championship.

What's the latest news involving Swift?

Swift has been in stunning form in the second tier, netting seven goals and delivering five assists in his 11 appearances to date.

He is out of contract at the Madejski Stadium at the end of the season, though, so his future at Reading is far from certain.

It has been reported that Wolves, along with Burnley, Crystal Palace and Norwich are all considering making an approach for Swift in January, and then potentially signing him on a free transfer in the summer.

What has Hatfield said about Wolves potentially signing Swift?

Hatfield feels that signing Swift could be regarded as a surprise move by Wolves as they have largely focused on bringing in talent from abroad in recent years. However, he admits that the attacking midfielder is clearly a fine player, based on how he has performed in the Championship in recent months.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about Wolves' interest in Swift, Hatfield stated: “The only thing you’d say in terms of Wolves’ transfer policy is you don’t see them too often plucking a name out of the Championship or British football in general, do you? It’s normally a player which you’ve not heard too much about, but the stats don’t lie with John Swift, do they?”

Should Wolves change their transfer policy to sign Swift?

Since returning to the Premier League in 2018, Wolves have rarely ventured into the market for English players, instead opting to sign other targets from across Europe, especially Portugal.

On the whole, it has worked well for them, as they secured back-to-back top seven finishes in their first two years back in the top-flight.

However, they took a backwards step last season by ending the campaign down in 13th, so it seems like they might need to freshen up their transfer policy a little to get firmly back on track.

Going after a player like Swift who knows English football well and is seemingly in his prime could be a good place to start.

Although his Premier League experience is almost non-existent, he has flourished at the level below, and it could now be the right time for Wolves to take a calculated gamble by tempting him over to Molineux to show what he can do in the top-flight.
