Prior to Manchester City's 2-2 draw with Liverpool earlier this month, Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane took a swipe at England right-back Kyle Walker, branding him a "car-crash" who makes "too many mistakes" defensively.

Keane did, though, admit that the 31-year-old has still managed to have "a very good career" despite his defensive flaws.

Essentially, this is a testament to the evolution of the full-back, the ideal attributes for which have changed considerably since the turn of the century.

Once almost exclusively a defensive role, many modern-day right-backs are expected to contribute just as much in the attacking third of the field as they do at the back.

The ability to bomb forward down the flank and chip in frequently with assists (and even goals) is highly prized by top clubs.

Keane may not be a massive fan of Walker, but the Man City man has been named the fourth-best right-back on the planet by FourFourTwo.

In taking on the admittedly tricky task of ranking the top 10 most capable players in the role right now, there is a definite attacking theme that flows through the list. You can check out their opinion below.

10. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United)

9. Zeki Celik (Lille)

8. Reece James (Chelsea)

7. Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

6. Benjamin Pavard (Bayern Munich)

5. Kieran Trippier (Atletico Madrid)

4. Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

3. Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain)

2. Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

1. Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Premier League duo Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Reece James are famed for their willingness to provide attacking width for Manchester United and Chelsea respectively - and both make the cut accordingly.

Kieran Trippier isn't blessed with the pace of some on this countdown but his crossing ability from open play as well as set pieces makes the Atletico Madrid man a threat to any opposition.

Ultimate Ballon d'Or quiz: One question on every 2021 male nominee

Having swapped Inter Milan for Paris Saint Germain over the summer, exciting Morrocan youngster Achraf Hakimi looks set to pose many issues for defenders in Ligue 1 this season. Once the exceptionally creative 22-year-old forges an understanding with the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, it seems inevitable that the assists will flow at the Parc des Princes for the third-placed entry.

Even being ranked fourth in the world isn't enough to see Walker reign as the best right-back at the Etihad, though, as versatile Portuguese star Joao Canelo is slotted in at number two on the list. The 27-year-old, who can play in a whole host of positions, has a genuine claim as one of the most in-form players in world football in the last few years.

Ultimately, however, it is Liverpool's Trent-Alexander-Arnold who takes home the top spot. An ever-willing runner on the overlap for club and country, the 23-year-old already boasts Champions League and Premier League winners' medals in his career - and can also hang his hat on having taken that corner against Barcelona.

The nature of ranking players means that it will never be possible to please everybody, but it's hard to deny the quality of those included.
