West Brom latest news: 22-cap Baggies star set for 'big role' vs Birmingham

West Bromwich Albion head coach Valerien Ismael

Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield has backed West Bromwich Albion striker Callum Robinson to build on his impressive form during the international break by putting rivals Birmingham City to the sword.

What's the latest news involving Robinson?

Robinson has made a promising start to the Championship campaign, bagging three goals and providing a trio of assists in 10 outings.

The 26-year-old will return to the Hawthorns following a goal-laden period with the Republic of Ireland, with him taking his international tally up to six having gone into the break from domestic football with just one Irish goal to his name.

Robinson got the ball rolling by grabbing a brace in the World Cup qualifying victory over Azerbaijan last weekend.

He then went one better earlier this week as he grabbed a hat-trick in the friendly with 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar.

It led to Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny admitting he hopes Robinson, who has now won 22 caps, understands how valuable he could be at international level.

Robinson's impressive form will come as a huge boost to Valerien Ismael, who was appointed as West Brom's new head coach in the summer, ahead of facing rivals Birmingham at the Hawthorns on Friday.

The frontman's resurgence comes after finding the back of the net just six times in 29 senior appearances for the Baggies last season.

What has Luke Hatfield said about Robinson?

Hatfield believes Robinson will build on his goalscoring performances for the Republic of Ireland when he returns to action for West Brom.

The journalist insists the striker will cause Birmingham's backline plenty of problems.

Hatfield told GIVEMESPORT: "It wouldn't surprise me if Callum Robinson played a big role against Birmingham because he's a potent striker at this level.

"In the Championship, whether he's cutting in off the left, off the right or down the middle, he is always going to be a threat and he links play up really well.

"He's got that little bit of pace off the mark, so he will cause problems for any side in the Championship.

"I think Valerien Ismael will just be happy to see him hitting the back of the net to keep his confidence nice and high."

Why was Robinson in the news recently?

Robinson, who joined West Brom on an initial loan in January 2020 before making the move from Sheffield United permanent a matter of months later, confirmed he has opted not to get vaccinated against Covid-19 despite contracting coronavirus twice since the initial outbreak.

According to RTE, via the Irish Sun, former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given leapt to Robinson's defence despite criticism over snubbing the jab.

The striker revealed his Irish team-mates have helped him get through a tough period after making the admission.
