Mohamed Salah: How Liverpool star's penalty 'injured AC Milan goalkeeper'

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah's penalty vs AC Milan

Everyone was shocked when Mohamed Salah missed a penalty for Liverpool last month.

The Egyptian had scored the previous 17 spot-kicks for the club but saw his effort saved by Mike Maignan during Liverpool’s Champions League clash against AC Milan at Anfield.

It almost proved costly for Jurgen Klopp’s side, too.

Salah had missed the opportunity to put Liverpool 2-0 ahead early in the match. By half-time, Liverpool were 2-1 behind.

Salah did make amends by equalising in the second half before Jordan Henderson’s winner gave the Reds all three points.

Spare a thought for Maignan, then, whose unlikely penalty save against Salah was all in vain.

Not only that but the save has actually proved incredibly costly for the goalkeeper.

That’s because he was actually injured by the penalty.

According to Football Italia, Maignan fell awkwardly after saving the penalty. By watching the video, it’s clear he’s in some pain after making the save and needed treatment.

He’s started every match for the club since but, a scan during the international break showed he needed arthroscopy, a type of keyhole surgery on his wrist.

It’s now believed he will be sidelined for around 10 weeks as he recovers.

That’s the cost of saving a Salah penalty…

Milan have signed 38-year-old goalkeeper Antonio Mirante on a free transfer in response.

Maignan was snapped up by the Italian club from Lille in the summer after Gianluigi Donnarumma had left San Siro for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

He’s impressed immensely since his arrival with the club unbeaten in their first seven Serie A matches.

However, he will now have to watch on from the sidelines with Ciprian Tatarasanu set to replace him.

Maignan will be hoping to be fit for Milan’s home clash against Liverpool on December 7. Although you won’t blame him if he didn’t relish facing Salah again anytime soon.
