Few people will need reminding of the influence Steven Gerrard exuded across his glittering spell at Liverpool

The beating heart of the side who lifted the Champions League in 2005, the midfielder is arguably the club's greatest ever player and embodied the famous connection between the club and its fans.

Such was the level of his respect, that extended behind the scenes too.

As one of the leading players in the Premier League era, as well as one of the best in Europe, Gerrard's voice naturally carried a huge amount of weight.

When he spoke, people listened.

Indeed, never was that more the case when former teammate Craig Bellamy argued with Kenny Dalglish during a game in the early 2010s.

Speaking to the Under The Cosh Podcast, former Liverpool and England winger Stewart Downing didn't go into specifics of the fixture in question, but did share some fascinating behind the scenes insight.

"I always remember one day, when someone gets a dressing down and they melt, (Bellamy) melted and he’d probably tell you that," he said.

"He had a go at Kenny (Dalglish) at full time in a game. He was on the bench and he came on, and he was saying "you should have played me there cause I’m quick" and Kenny said "shut your mouth, sit down".

"Then Steven Gerrard, I’ve probably seen him lose his head twice in his career since I’ve known him. He came in and gave it to Bellers (saying) "shut your f***ing mouth".

"He dressed him down and he (Bellamy) just melted. Melted. I’ve never seen that. You know what Bellers is like, he’s funny. But he was stuttering about, and I just looked and thought "wow".

"Bellers couldn't control what he said at times. Stevie I think was banned for the game but came in and hit him and he just melted."

Bellamy, a fairly outspoke individual in his own right, was seemingly put in his place by perhaps the only rival to Dalglish's iconic standing at Anfield.
