Max Verstappen has certainly impressed a great deal this season in Formula 1 and a recent stat released by the sport's official Twitter page could well underline that better than anything else this year.

The Dutchman is taking the fight to Lewis Hamilton this campaign in the Drivers' championship with the pair locked in a season-long battle for the title.

With six races to go, it really is anyone's guess as to where the crown is going to head but, if it was decided on laps led alone, we'd probably already have our champ for this year.

Of course, that's not how this sport is decided but a measure of how strong Verstappen has been this season can be found via this stat on Twitter from F1, with the Dutchman leading more laps this year than the rest of the field, including title rival Lewis Hamilton, combined:

That is a pretty crazy stat when you consider the different race leaders and winners we have had this year, and also the nature of how tight the championship battle is between Max and Lewis.

It shows Hamilton's ability to get results when they really matter, and also reminds us that this season Max has been untouchable at times, with Red Bull proving particularly dominant mid-season.

Verstappen knows, though, that this stat is merely a nice number and nothing else. The only thing that counts is the points tally at the end of the campaign and he'll be looking to make sure that six point advantage he has right now only increases in the final races of the year.
