Oriol Romeu is currently working as Southampton summer signing Lyanco's translator as the central defender settles into life at St Mary's, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

What's the latest news involving Lyanco?

Lyanco became Southampton's seventh signing of the summer transfer window when he joined from Serie A outfit Torino for a reported fee of £6.4million a matter of days before the deadline passed at the end of August.

The 24-year-old, who agreed terms on a four-year deal with Ralph Hasenhuttl's side, chose to complete the switch to Saints despite interest from Italian side Udinese and Watford.

However, Lyanco has had to be patient in his new surroundings as, following his transfer, the centre-half has made just one appearance.

That came in the Carabao Cup third round tie at Sheffield United and he is still waiting to make his Premier League debut.

Hasenhuttl has claimed Lyanco is a "long-term project" and the Brazilian will have to follow in the footsteps of fellow defender Mohammed Salisu, who was also forced to bide his time after his switch to St Mary's last year.

What has Tom Barclay been saying about Lyanco?

Barclay believes it will still be some time before Lyanco is given the opportunity to nail down a place in Hasenhuttl's preferred line-up.

The journalist claims Lyanco's lack of English has played a leading factor in Hasenhuttl's decision not to throw Lyanco straight into Saints' defence.

However, Barclay has revealed Spanish central midfielder Romeu is playing a key role in trying to help Lyanco to adjust to life in the Premier League.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: "I think, looking at how they dealt with Salisu last season, ideally, they would give him much longer to adapt because I think he also doesn't really speak any English yet.

"He's learning off Romeu at the moment and he is acting as his translator.

"Particularly with a backline, when you're looking to communicate and hold the line, it's really important."

Who is keeping Lyanco out of Saints' backline?

Southampton currently have four senior central defenders on their books - Lyanco, Salisu, Jack Stephens and Jan Bednarek.

Stephens is currently on the sidelines after sustaining a tendon problem in his knee, with Hasenhuttl confirming last month that the 27-year-old would be out of action for up to 12 weeks.

Salisu, meanwhile, has started six of Saints' seven Premier League fixtures so far this season and Poland international Bednarek has made as many appearances in all competitions.
