There aren't many midfielders in history who can lay claim to being superior to Andrea Pirlo.

Between 2001 and 2015, the long-haired maestro oozed class on the pitch for AC Milan, Juventus and the Italian national team.

Pirlo's sublime performances in the middle of the park helped secure trophies for all three teams, including two Champions Leagues with Milan and a World Cup.

The 42-year-old made the deep-lying playmaker position his own and the way he used to carve opposing teams open with one technically-perfect pass was quite something.

Pirlo's vision and creativity made him a joy to watch, as did his uncanny ability to score stunning goals.

The three-time Serie A Footballer of the Year only found the back of the net 73 times in 756 games at club level.

However, on those rare(ish) occasions that Pirlo got his name on the scoresheet, it was nearly always spectacular.

The suave Italian's collection of wonder-goals is vast, but there's one in particular that stands head and shoulders above rest.

We are, of course, referring to Pirlo's outrageous 40-yard screamer against Parma in October 2010, a goal that appeared to defy the laws of physics and left the legendary Ronaldinho in disbelief on the pitch.

How is it possible to strike a football like that?!

Pirlo's shot initially didn't appear to be hit with enough power to reach the top corner from all of 40 yards out, but it somehow continued on its intended path and left the goalkeeper with no hope of saving it whatsoever.

As long-range goals go, that's right up there with the best ever scored on a football pitch.

Pirlo's iconic strike that secured a priceless 1-0 win versus Parma was actually his last in a Milan shirt.
