With McGregor likely out for some time following his fracture during Poirier vs McGregor III, it has left the door open for the 155-pound MMA veteran Poirier to move on to a title hunt.
Here’s everything you need to know about Dustin Poirier’s next UFC fight.
Poirier turned down the opportunity to fight for the UFC Lightweight title earlier this year to get the trilogy fight against McGregor.
At the time, it was seen as a risk, but a calculated risk that saw Poirier earn a huge amount against the highest drawing UFC fighter of all time in McGregor.
Poirier has said that he would fight McGregor again, stating in an interview with Valuetainment ’s Patrick Bet-David: “I mean, I will if he can heal up and if they can add some commas on that check I think, yeah.”
UFC 269: Oliveira vs Poirier
Although not officially confirmed by the UFC, Poirier will be facing Charles Oliveira for the 155-pound gold at UFC 269 on Saturday, December 11th 2021.
This huge fight is set to be the last main event of 2021, with Poirier potentially rounding out his biggest year in MMA with gold around his waist.
Should Poirier get the win, there will be calls for McGregor to potentially get a fourth fight against him. Although McGregor is not considered at the top of the 155-pound division, it would be difficult for Dana White and the UFC to not book one of the biggest hyped contests in the history of the sport.
American Top Team coach Mike Brown has predicted that Poirier will defeat Oliveira in December, stating that he is the top lightweight fighter in the world. He said: “I love the matchup. It’s exciting. His style, he’s an elite submission grappler, one of the best in the sport and it’s a fun puzzle. But I think Dustin is the best lightweight in the world, without a doubt.”
