After Saturday's 4-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is facing the toughest period of his managerial spell at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have now taken just one point from a possible nine in the Premier League - and have won just a single game in their last five outings across all competitions.

It's the sort of form you associate with a relegation-threatened side. United's plight isn't quite that desperate yet, but when you consider that the club spent well in excess of £100 million to bring in the superstar trio of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, it easy to see why #OleOut is trending on Twitter.

The road ahead doesn't get any kinder for the 48-year-old Norwegian, either. His side face tricky assignments against Liverpool and Tottenham next up in the Premier League, with those fixtures sandwiched between a crucial pair of Champions League meetings with Atalanta.

A poor run of results over the next month could well be the final straw for the United board, particularly as there are a number of viable candidates waiting in the wings should Solksjaer be relieved of his duties.

Who could replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United manager?

One of the most high-profile jobs in all of world football, there would certainly be no shortage of takers for the United hot-seat if it becomes available.

Let's name take a look at some of the names that could be in the frame for the role. Quoted odds are taken per Sky Bet and are current at time of publishing.

Steven Gerrard - 100/1

The former Liverpool captain is quoted in the market, so we'll address his prospects.

The 41-year-old has done a fine job as Rangers boss since taking over at Ibrox in 2018 and has been linked with Premier League roles elsewhere recently.

However, given his history with United, there's very little chance that they would consider offering him the job - and even less that he'd accept it. This one isn't happening.

Roy Keane - 80/1

There's probably a fair few United fans who would love for Keane to get nose-to-nose with certain members of the squad and tell them some home truths in his own unique style. However, the Irishman hasn't been in sole charge of a team since leaving Ipswich a decade ago.

Don't expect him to abandon the Sky Sports studio any time soon!

Diego Simeone - 40/1

Now we're getting slightly more realistic! The United job would represent a new challenge for the fiery Argentine, who will shortly celebrate a decade in charge at Atletico Madrid. Having only won the La Liga title last year, Simeone seems intent upon building on recent success with his current side.

Roberto Mancini - 20/1

The 56-year-old added a major international tournament to his managerial CV this summer when he guided Italy to glory at Euro 2020. On that same CV, however, is the 2011/12 Premier League title that he famously won with Man City, denying United in the final moments of the season.

A very capable boss, but surely not Solskjaer's successor.

Gareth Southgate - 20/1

One of the more successful coaches of the England national side over the last half-century, Southgate's sole experience at club level came at Middlesborough more than 10 years ago. It would be a truly bizarre call if he was to be offered the reigns at United.

Zinedine Zidane - 10/1

While Southgate may lack pedigree in club football management, the legendary Frenchman definitely does not. Boasting no less than three Champions League successes during his time at Real Madrid, Zidane has the profile to suggest that he could pretty seamlessly take control of matters at United.

He's readily available too, having left Real at the end of last season. The fact that his name was trending on social media after the Leicester defeat says a lot about how United fans feel about the prospect of him taking over at Old Trafford.

Laurent Blanc - 10/1

A former United player - like Solskjaer - Blanc has a decent managerial resume to has credit having had spells as manager of the French national side, as well as Paris Saint-Germain.

The 55-year-old is currently the boss of Qatari side Al Rayyan - although he would surely jump at the chance to lead United if offered.

Mauricio Pochettino - 4/1

From a former PSG boss to the current one.

The United hierarchy made little secret of their admiration for the 49-year-old Argentine during his time as Tottenham boss - and it would be no surprise to see them look in his direction again.

Of course, Pochettino is already in possession of one of the game's top jobs at the Parc des Princes, but stranger things have happened in football.

Brendan Rodgers - 4/1

It would be an ironic twist if Foxes manager Rodgers was to be the man to replace Solskjaer after his Leicester side inflicted such a damaging defeat on United this weekend.

Highly-rated Rodgers came within a whisker of lifting the Premier League title with Liverpool in 2014 - and has done a creditable job at the King Power Stadium since his arrival two years ago.

It seems inevitable that the Northern Irishman will one day land another role with one of Europe's elite. There's no reason why that couldn't be with United.

Antonio Conte - 2/1 (Favourite)

The former Chelsea boss is without a club at present after leaving Inter Milan at the end of last season.

Conte led Inter to Serie A glory last term, but departed the San Siro shortly after due to disagreements with the board.

Earlier this year, the 52-year-old had been linked with a switch to Arsenal, before Mikel Arteta managed to turn things around at the Emirates.

Free of any obligations, Conte could feasibly become an instant replacement for Solskjaer should United decide to move in that direction. A world-class manager, it's not hard to understand why the Italian is the bookies favourite to take over at the Theatre of Dreams.
