Arsenal have moved a step closer in their attempts to sign Real Madrid midfielder Esteban Granero reports talkSPORT.

The 24-year-old Spaniard has struggled to force his way into Los Blancos first-team, and would consider a move to England if it materialised.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has made contact with Jose Mourinho to discuss the possibility of Granero moving to the Emirates Stadium in January.

With £6million being mooted as the fee needed to make a move to north London happen, Arsenal are keen to agree a deal as Wenger continues to look for cover for injured duo Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere.

After losing the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in the summer, the Gunners have strengthened their midfield ranks with the signing of Mikel Arteta, Yossi Benayoun and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

But Wenger is determined to secure the signature of Granero as he feels the Madrid outcast can play a key role in helping Arsenal challenge at the top of the Barclays Premier League table.
