Following his outstanding performance in Liverpool's 5-0 Premier League victory against Watford on Saturday, there's a growing sentiment that Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah is the best player on the planet at the moment.

The 29-year-old ran the show for the Reds at Vicarage Road. He didn't want much time in stamping his authority on the game either, setting up Sadio Mane's opener with a delightful pass after just eight minutes.

Salah was in such sublime form against the Hornets that it seemed inevitable that he would get himself on the scoresheet at some point. It took him until the early stages of the second half to do so, but it was absolutely worth the wait when it arrived.

Having received the ball from Roberto Firmino inside the penalty area, Salah skillfully negotiated his way past a number of Watford defenders before cutting back and slamming the ball beyond Ben Foster for Liverpool's fourth. It was a sensational goal - and a fitting reward for his overall contribution.

For many players, such a goal would be among the best of their careers. For Salah, it was simply more of the same, having netted a similarly exquisite effort against Manchester City a fortnight ago.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp couldn't help but lavish praise on his star man after the match, calling Salah "absolutely exceptional".

"I think that it’s clear there is nobody better than him in world football at the moment," declared Klopp - an opinion that many others have since echoed.

Mo Salah's agent in talks with Liverpool over bumper new contract

Salah currently has less than two years left to run on his existing deal at Liverpool and Anfield chiefs are understandably keen to get a new one tied up as soon as possible.

To that end, Salah's agent Ramy Abbas Issa reportedly flew into England on Saturday to attend the Watford game and continue talks over a bumper contract extension for his client.

The Egyptian, who has now struck 104 Premier League goals in his career, is seemingly happy to stay on Merseyside. However, according to The Mirror, both the player and his agent want Liverpool to make Salah the highest-paid player at the club - to the tune of £500,000 a week - before he signs on the dotted line.

The Ultimate Mohamed Salah Quiz: How well do you know the Liverpool star?

While there's no denying the considerable nature of that salary, it is on a par with some of the world's top players - company among which Salah now clearly belongs on the basis of his performances this season.

Fans often complain about the amount of money paid to top stars in the modern era. With that said, you might struggle to find a Liverpool supporter who would argue that Salah isn't deserving of increased financial compensation in recognition of his current form.

If Salah continues to turn in showings of the quality he has recently, then it could even turn out to be somewhat of a bargain!
