Man United news: Paul Pogba could outshine Mohamed Salah as divisive EPL question looms

Manchester United's Paul Pogba has won silverware while on international duty

Manchester United star Paul Pogba is currently rivalling Liverpool's Mo Salah as the Premier League's standout player, according to journalist Emmet Gates.

What's the latest news involving Pogba?

Pogba, who returned to Old Trafford from Italian giants Juventus after a then-world record move worth £89million was completed five years ago, got the campaign off to an impressive start by recording four assists in Manchester United's opening day win over rivals Leeds United.

The Frenchman has continued to create goalscoring opportunities for his team-mates and tops the Premier League chart after notching seven assists so far this season.

Pogba has also clinched silverware during the international break, after helping France overcome Belgium and Spain in the Nations League last week.

The central midfielder played all 180 minutes of those fixtures, taking his tally up to 89 caps for his homeland.

France head coach Didier Deschamps also told Eurosport, via the Manchester Evening News, that he has seen improvements in Pogba's game and the United man has grown in importance.

Meanwhile, Spanish media outlet AS have reported Pogba is on Real Madrid's radar.

What has Emmet Gates said about Pogba?

While Pogba is top of the pile when it comes to Premier League assists, Liverpool attacker Salah is leading the way in the top flight's goalscoring charts - alongside Leicester City's Jamie Vardy - having found the back of the net six times heading into the weekend.

Gates believes there is a case for Pogba - along with the likes of Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne and Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane - to be Salah's biggest challenger as the Premier League's best player.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: "Even though his form isn't as good as Salah's at the moment, you can't write him off.

"They're obviously world class players and there's actually a lot of players you could probably put in that mix at the moment.

"You could make the argument for either one of them."

Do pundits rate Pogba as highly?

Speaking during his Sky Sports punditry duties, via the Mirror, Graeme Souness refused to praise Pogba after he claimed four assists in the win over Leeds back in August.

Who is the top scorer from Liverpool and Man United's Premier League meetings?

Souness is known to have been critical of Pogba in the past and, last year, the former Liverpool midfielder admitted he gets "hammered" for criticising the Frenchman.

But while speaking on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday last month, via the Manchester Evening News, Paul Merson claimed Pogba is the top flight's best midfielder.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich also insisted Pogba, 28, is one of the best players in the world.
