Emmet Gates has claimed Liverpool are stuck in a catch-22 situation when it comes selling Divock Origi. 

The journalist believes a lack of game-time has made it harder for the Reds to offload the Belgium international.

Last month, Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp spoke candidly about a lack of interest in Origi during the summer transfer window, suggesting the club were intending to let him go. 

After a 3-2 win over AC Milan in the Champions League, Klopp said to reporters: "[Divock] played a beautiful game. People forget how good he is, it's difficult to get into this team.

"In the summer transfer window we all thought there would be a proper offer for him, but obviously people don't watch football enough. 

"He's a sensational striker and he did really well today."

At the start of the summer, Fabrizio Romano claimed Liverpool wanted £17.2m for Origi, but it appears no club were willing to meet the Merseyside outfit's valuation.

What has Emmet Gates said about Divock Origi?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Gates suggested Liverpool have found themselves in a catch-22 situation regarding Origi. 

While he's clearly out of favour under Klopp - the 29-cap forward made only nine Premier League appearances last season - a lack of game-time has made him less desirable to potential buyers. 

The journalist told GMS: "The problem with Origi is he didn't play last season, so if you don't play you're not putting yourself in the window and therefore no-one's going to buy you, so it's a catch-22." 

Is Divock Origi leaving Liverpool?

It seems Origi will be leaving Liverpool one way or the other before next season. 

The 26-year-old's contract is due to expire in the summer, meaning unless Liverpool sell him in the next transfer window, he'll almost certainly be leaving the club on a free transfer. 

That is perhaps why Klopp not only talked up Origi's ability but also alluded to his availability last month - the Reds only have one opportunity left to secure a fee for the Belgian. 

Even that will be difficult because foreign clubs will be allowed to discuss a pre-contract with Origi at the end of January. 

The Reds would need to find a buyer from English football in January or a foreign club that can't wait until the summer to bring him in.
