Emmet Gates believes Liverpool would have axed Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain during the summer transfer window if they'd received an acceptable offer for the England international.

Oxlade-Chamberlain spent much of last season on the sidelines through injury and had made just one Premier League start during the current campaign prior to the weekend.

What's the latest news involving Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?

Oxlade-Chamberlain has recently been linked with a surprise return to former club Arsenal, who sold the versatile midfielder to Liverpool back in summer 2017.

It's claimed the Gunners are interested in a six-month loan deal with the view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has struggled with injuries throughout his time on Merseyside. He's missed 74 games through injury for the Reds.

Due to his limited involvement, the 35-cap international wouldn't be a massive loss at Anfield and Gates has even claimed Liverpool would've let him leave during the summer.

What has Emmet Gates said about Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?

Speaking with GIVEMESPORT, Gates has suggested that Oxlade-Chamberlain would've been allowed to leave Merseyside this summer if the club had received an 'acceptable' offer for his services.

The journalist also picked up on his injury problems and discussed how they've prevented him from producing his best form recently.

Gates told GMS: "Oxlade-Chamberlain has been injured more often than not. He's come back, he's failing to get any rhythm. I think if Liverpool had received an acceptable offer in the summer, he would have left."

What age is Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?

Oxlade-Chamberlain is now 28 years of age and considering he first broke into the Arsenal team as a teenager, there's a common feeling he's never quite reached his full potential.

The 5 foot 11 midfielder has a wealth of Three Lions caps to his name, was part of Liverpool's Champions League and Premier League-winning squads, and has enjoyed glimpses of brilliance throughout his career.

His first season at Liverpool, for example, playing in a dynamic central midfield role, resulted in three goals and seven assists in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, Oxlade-Chamberlain's momentum has been constantly stifled by injury problems, preventing him from holding down a long-term role in Liverpool's starting XI.

Does Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have a brother?

Oxlade-Chamberain has a brother called Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, who currently plays for non-league side Aldershot Town in the fifth tier of English football.

The Liverpool star's dad was also a footballer, former England international Mark Chamberlain, as well as uncle Neville Chamberlain who most prominently played for Port Vale.
