Newcastle United should be looking to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Conor Gallagher, according to The Sun's Tom Barclay.

Gallagher is currently on loan at Selhurst Park from Chelsea, and has lit up the Premier League since the start of the season.

What's the latest news at Newcastle?

It has been a chaotic ten days for the club off the field after their long-awaited takeover went through, and attention has now turned to how the team can start performing on the pitch.

The Magpies must pick up positive results to stave off the threat of relegation, and this could lead to them being busy in the next transfer window in January.

Newcastle have been linked with French duo Adrien Rabiot and Wesley Fofana in recent days, while Gallagher's name has also been thrown into the mix as a player that could be potentially targeted.

What has Barclay said about Newcastle potentially signing Gallagher?

Geordie icon Alan Shearer has been impressed by Gallagher this term, who has scored twice and provided an assist in his six league appearances for Palace.

Barclay has also taken note of the 21-year-old, and feels he would be an ideal signing for Newcastle as they look to start what promises to be an exciting journey over the coming years under their new owners.

Speaking about the possibility of Newcastle moving for the England Under-21 international, Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “From a Gallagher point of view, if it were me, I'd be looking at players like that. Definitely.

"For Newcastle, it would be a very sensible acquisition, if you can get it."

Would Gallagher be a good signing for Newcastle?

When a major takeover is completed, it seems that owners are often tempted to make a statement of intent by signing a high-profile player. Of course, we all remember Robinho coming to Manchester City in 2008, but that didn't work out particularly well as he moved on within two years.

Big names are likely to be linked with Newcastle over the next couple of months given their new-found wealth, but it must be remembered that they are currently in a relegation battle. With this in mind, they should be going after players who are hungry and up for the fight, rather than past-their-prime stars who are only seeking a pay cheque.

Gallagher looks to be a player who fits the former criteria, and could be a useful addition to Newcastle's squad if he does move to St James' Park.

As well as he has done at Palace, he faces a tough challenge to ever break into Chelsea's team given the midfielders that Thomas Tuchel has at his disposal, so there may be an opportunity for Newcastle to wade in and land the youngster.

Then they could start to push up the table with Gallagher at the heart of their midfield, as they look to go in search of major honours in the years ahead.
