Journalist Tom Barclay reckons that Southampton are hoping to bring in another goalkeeper in the near-future.
What's their current goalkeeping situation?
However, whilst they've been at St Mary's for some time and have been given their fair share of opportunities under Ralph Hasenhuttl, they've both made costly mistakes over the years, which would explain why Southampton are looking to add to their goalkeeping department.
Despite both being free agents in the summer, McCarthy, who's the current number one having played every minute in the league this season, is the likelier of the two to stick around, with Forster making just nine Premier League appearances under Hasenhuttl and therefore clearly not fancied.
Should Forster move on either in January or next summer, depending on whether Southampton are hoping to bring in some sort of fee for him, he'll need to be replaced.

And Barclay expects that to happen and McCarthy to be competing with the potential new arrival for the number one shirt.
What did Barclay say?
He told GIVEMESPORT: "They are looking to bring in a goalkeeper, so McCarthy needs to weigh up whether he's going to be a number two and a new signing is expecting to play number one."

In recent years, Southampton have generally gone down the route of having an English goalkeeper, with Forster and McCarthy coming in after Kelvin Davies spent almost a decade at St Mary's.
According to the Express & Star, Saints are planning to make a January bid for another Three Lions keeper in Sam Johnstone, who's out of contract in 2022, although that could see Southampton bring him to the club for a cut-price.
The Baggies set a £10m asking-price for Johnstone following interest from both Tottenham and West Ham earlier this summer, although that fee would most likely decrease by the time the January window swings around.
Whether or not Hasenhuttl still sees McCarthy as his number one moving forward, Johnstone would be an excellent addition.News Now - Sport News
