There is no denying that the last month has not been a good one for Manchester United - or their beleaguered manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After Saturday's 4-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester, the Red Devils have now taken just a single point from the last nine available in the Premier League. The story doesn't get any better across all competitions either, as United have managed just one solitary victory in their past six outings.

Given the statute of the club - and the fact that they splashed out over £120 million over the summer on the trio of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo - far better was expected from Solskjaer and his troops this season.

Such has been United's downturn in fortunes recently that a growing number of supporters are now calling for the Norwegian to be relieved of his duties as manager.

For talkSPORT presenter - and United fan - Alex Crook, though, the issues with Solskjaer have been present for far longer than just this season.

Speaking after his side's dismal showing at the King Power Stadium over the weekend, Crook launched into a scathing rant about the state of affairs at Old Trafford - and it was Ole who took the brunt of his criticism.

"Really - apart from Leeds on the opening day - I don't think United have played well all season.

"I think what's been lost since is how well David de Gea has been performing and how many games he's kept us in with big saves," suggested Crook.

Cristiano Ronaldo 'causing more problems than he solving' for Solskjaer

The presenter's first major criticism of Solskjaer came over his failure to effectively deploy five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in the United set-up.

"I was suggested to me earlier that Ronaldo is causing more problems than he's solving. If that is the case, then it comes back to Solskjaer. There isn't a manager in the world who wouldn't want Ronaldo.

"If you can't find a way to accommodate him and play to his strengths, then that is exposing your shortcomings as a manager!"

Crook also took aim at the United boss over his handling of England winger Sancho since his arrival at the Theatre of Dreams.

"Sancho was the one player that Solskjaer implored the board to bring to the club. Now he's there, the manager doesn't know how to use him. This is one of the brightest young midfielders in European football and you can see his confidence ebbing away."

"There's so much wrong with this United team," Crook continued. "The defending [against Leicester] was comical. It was schoolboy - and yet the majority of match-going supporters are still behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He still gets applauded by the fans. Why? The performances are lamentable. They're miles away from Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea.

"They've got Liverpool next weekend. Take your calculators, advised Crook. "That is gonna be a hammering!"

Based on the form that Liverpool and a certain Mo Salah are in at present, that statement might not be too far off the mark.
