Frank Lampard "would be interested" in succeeding Steve Bruce as Newcastle United's new boss, according to The Athletic journalist Chris Waugh.

What's the latest news involving Bruce and Lampard?

Newcastle have endured a winless start to the campaign and, following their 3-2 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, Bruce conceded his future at the club is out of his hands.

Speaking to Sky Sports, via the Sun, Bruce called on the Magpies' new owners - following a £305million takeover earlier this month - to give him clarity over his position going forward.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, via MailOnline, has claimed Bruce wants to be put out of his misery as Newcastle's fans continue to call for his sacking.

Bruce's son Alex has also weighed in on the situation, with him suggesting the current head coach has been the "fall guy" amid the club's struggles.

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been named as a potential candidate to replace Bruce.

Lampard has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in January.

What has Chris Waugh said about Lampard?

Waugh has alleged that Lampard would be keen on taking over the managerial reins at St James' Park.

Lampard is available as he has not taken charge of another club since departing Stamford Bridge, where he won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during a glittering playing career.

The former England midfielder, who was capped 106 times at international level, was linked with the England under-21 managerial vacancy earlier this year before the FA turned to Lee Carsley instead.

Waugh claims Lampard is in the running for the Newcastle job if the new owners opt to show Bruce the door.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: "He is a realistic option in the sense that he's available and I think that he would be interested in the job. That is my understanding."

How do Lampard and Bruce's records compare?

Lampard started his managerial career with Championship side Derby County, where he was appointed in 2018.

The 43-year-old's reign lasted 57 matches, with him chalking up 26 wins along the way and narrowly missing out on promotion to the Premier League following a play-off final defeat to Aston Villa.

Lampard was then named as Chelsea's new head coach in the summer of 2019 and he went on to guide the Blues to 44 victories from 84 outings before being shown the door in January.

Bruce has significantly more experience than Lampard and was in the dugout for the 1,000th time as Newcastle lost to Spurs at the weekend.

The 60-year-old has led his sides to 373 wins over the course of his career.
