James Rodriguez's move to Everton proved to be a failure for the club after he failed to fire them into Europe, according to journalist Paul Brown.

The winger's short Goodison Park stint came to an end after he joined Qatari club Al-Rayyan for an undisclosed fee last month.

What's the latest news involving James?

James made the move to the Premier League for the first time in his career when he completed a switch to Everton from Spanish giants Real Madrid last year.

He went on to score six goals and register a further nine assists in 26 appearances for the Merseyside club, but injuries hampered his progress.

A huge turning point in James' Everton career came in the summer, when Carlo Ancelotti quit Goodison Park in favour of a return to Real Madrid and Rafa Benitez was appointed as the Italian's successor.

James was told that he did not feature in Benitez's plans and his exit was confirmed having failed to ever feature in front of a jam-packed Goodison Park.

The 30-year-old made his Al-Rayyan debut at the weekend, but he was unable to stop his new employers falling to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Al-Duhail.

What has Paul Brown said about James?

Brown believes Everton drafted James in as they looked to break into the European places last season.

However, they finished 10th in the Premier League standings and, as a result, the journalist reckons the move failed to pay off.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: "I think Everton shot for the stars hoping James would get them into Europe.

"James signed for Carlo Ancelotti but then he left and it quickly became obvious that because he hadn't really played much towards the end of the season, he was going to be a casualty of the cost control measures.

"It's a transfer that didn't work, ultimately, because he was there to get them into Europe.

"They didn't get into Europe and he didn't play enough towards the end of last season, so I don't think you can say too many great things about the club on it from that point of view."

How did James' spell at Goodison Park come to an end?

Everton fans were overjoyed when James agreed a move to Merseyside, but his stay ended on a sour note.

He infuriated Toffees fans ahead of the club's clash with Leeds United earlier this season when, during a live broadcast on his Twitch account, he admitted to not knowing who Everton's next opponents were.

James failed to work his way into a single matchday squad following Benitez's appointment.
