Man Utd vs Liverpool combined XI: Carragher and Neville both pick their XIs

Carragher & Neville pick Man Utd/Liverpool combined XI

Manchester United vs Liverpool is still the biggest game in English football.

The two most successful clubs in the country may have only won one Premier League title between them in the last eight years but they’re still some of the biggest clubs in world football.

However, after decades of United dominating Premier League football and having bragging rights over their arch-rivals, it’s Liverpool who will go into Sunday’s clash with more confidence.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have made a strong start to the campaign and ran out 5-0 winners against Watford at the weekend.

As for Man Utd, they failed to win their third consecutive Premier League game as they fell to a 4-2 defeat to Leicester.

While both will play in the Champions League in midweek, the Merseyside club will travel to Old Trafford full of confidence.

Ultimate Liverpool quiz: Who assisted Gerrard's goal in Istanbul?

To whet the appetite of football fans, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville picked their Manchester United and Liverpool combined XIs ahead of Sunday’s match.

What followed was rather interesting.

Both Neville and Carragher picked only TWO Manchester United players in their XI. However, they disagreed on the two players.

Let’s take a look at Jamie Carragher’s XI first:

The headline is that he picked Mason Greenwood over Ronaldo. Wow.

However, before we demand he’s immediately sacked from all punditry duties, let’s hear his explanation.

"I'm a massive Greenwood fan, I think he's a superstar, I really do," Carragher said.

"How can you not put Ronaldo in, in terms of what he's done, legendary figure? I'm talking about actually right now, today, I'd have to have Greenwood.

"[Roberto] Firmino got a hat-trick for Liverpool at the weekend and has done really well but going back last season, and this season Greenwood is a superstar and I had to find a place for him in there."

Presenter David Jones later asked if Ronaldo would get in the Liverpool team and Carragher simply replied: "No".

Cristiano Ronaldo

The other tough decision Carragher made was Joel Matip over Harry Maguire.

He explained that selection by saying: “'I'm a huge Harry Maguire fan, he's a really good player, it's got nothing to do with his performance at the weekend [at Leicester] - but I actually think Matip has possibly been better than Virgil van Dijk this season.

"He's a player that goes under the radar because he's not a huge name, he came in on a free transfer, he's been there a long time under Jurgen Klopp, he's had injury problems.

"But every time he plays he's top class, he really is and that partnership with Virgil van Dijk is really good at the minute, it is.

"The performances he's given, certainly in the last 18 months, he was the centre-back who played in the Champions League final for Liverpool.

"He's played in so many big games, this season he's almost been an ever-present, he's been fantastic."

Now, let’s take a look at Gary Neville’s XI:

Neville has opted for Maguire over Matip. He obviously has selected Ronaldo but, rather interestingly, has gone for Roberto Firmino over Bruno Fernandes.

"It wasn't easy but just the idea he's one of the greatest goalscorers of all time, and with Salah and Mane I thought he should be up front," Neville said.

"You would have him up front. In that team, with Fabinho and [Jordan] Henderson behind, with Firmino behind and those two out wide he would be absolutely devastating."
