Newcastle manager news: Potential Bruce replacement has history with Allan Saint-Maximin

Newcastle forward Allan Saint-Maximin in action

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has confirmed that Newcastle managerial candidate Lucien Favre did not have a particularly good relationship with Allan Saint-Maximin when the duo previously worked together.

Favre has been a manager over the last three decades, coaching the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach, and he is now in the running to replace Steve Bruce at St James’ Park.

What’s the latest news involving Favre?

With Newcastle having failed to win any of their opening eight league games this term, Steve Bruce’s job is under significant threat, particularly after the club’s takeover went through earlier this month.

The 60-year-old is still in charge for now, but his days appear to be numbered. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Newcastle’s majority shareholders, have reportedly narrowed down his potential replacement to three names: Eddie Howe, Paulo Fonseca and Favre.

What has Waugh said about Favre and Saint-Maximin?

Favre and Saint-Maximin know each other from their time together in Ligue 1 at Nice. Waugh has hinted that the Frenchman is not the easiest player to manage, and did have a confrontation with Favre at one point.

Speaking about Saint-Maximin’s relationships with coaches in the past, he told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s had fallouts with previous managers. Lucien Favre was linked, and obviously when he was at Nice with Allan Saint-Maximin, the two of them didn’t really see eye-to-eye.”

Could it be an issue for Saint-Maximin if Favre is appointed?

Newcastle need to keep Saint-Maximin on side given that he has been their best player by some distance this season. The 24-year-old has been directly involved in five goals in the Premier League, and has earned an average WhoScored match rating of 7.53.

The attacker appeared to downplay any fallout with Favre last week, when he sarcastically tweeted about his argument with the Swiss manager. This indicated that he would not be too concerned if Favre did come in for Bruce in the near future.

Then again, we may have to simply wait and see if there is any lingering animosity between the pair. They have not worked together for a few years, and it seems that Saint-Maximin does not hold a grudge against Favre.

The experienced manager may see things differently, though, and their personalities could potentially clash again if they are reunited on Tyneside.
