David Luiz's free-kick for Chelsea v Liverpool is one of the Premier League's cheekiest

An iconic free-kick from David Luiz..

Whenever David Luiz scores a free-kick, it’s usually spectacular.

The Brazilian defender is far from the most accurate set-piece taker, but when he gets it right, it’s quite something.

Luiz’s greatest ever free-kick goal came at the 2014 World Cup, when the former Chelsea man rippled the back of the net from all of 35 yards out to help seal a quarter-final victory over Colombia.

As well as scoring the odd thunderbolt from distance, the 34-year-old once provided some very cheeky innovation from a dead-ball situation in Premier League action.

During the 2016/17 season, when Luiz’s commanding performances at the back were key to Chelsea’s title win under Antonio Conte, he netted a memorable free-kick in a 1-1 draw versus Liverpool at Anfield.

With teammate Willian lining up for a shot and the Reds’ goalkeeper Simon Mignolet assembling his defensive wall, Luiz caught everyone off guard and fired the ball into the bottom corner.

He may have gained a significant advantage by taking the free-kick quickly, but Luiz’s knuckle-ball effort still had to be bang on the money.

Mark Clattenburg had blown his whistle a few seconds before Luiz made contact with the ball, so the ingenious free-kick was legal.

Unsurprisingly, Mignolet was criticised for his role in the goal, although the current Club Brugge number one explained why he was so unprepared after the game.

“I didn’t hear the whistle and then he [Luiz] hits it early,” Mignolet told BT Sport, per Independent.

“It is a difficult feeling because it was a good free-kick in the end but you want to give yourself a chance of saving it in the end and that didn’t happen today.”

Fair play, Simon.

Mignolet went on to redeem himself to some degree later on in the game by saving a late penalty from Diego Costa.
