Manor Solomon "fits the bill" as Aston Villa boss Dean Smith looks to bolster his squad, according to BirminghamLive journalist Ashley Preece.

Solomon is currently on the books of Shakhtar Donetsk and was the subject of interest from Villa during the summer transfer window.

What's the latest news involving Solomon?

Israeli media outlet One claims Villa were linked with making a move for Solomon last year, but a transfer failed to come to fruition. The report suggests Serie A giants Roma were also mulling over submitting a bid.

Speculation over the 22-year-old's future with his current Ukrainian employers continued during the summer transfer window, with Solomon's agent Shlomi Ben Ezra telling Israeli publication Sport5 that Shakhtar refused to do business despite interest from the likes of Arsenal, Atalanta and Roma.

Arsenal also saw a £17million bid rejected in June, according to Ukrainian news outlet Sport Arena.

Villa instead opted to sign Bayer Leverkusen's Leon Bailey for a fee of £25million as they looked to improve their wide options before the window slammed shut at the end of August.

Smith's side also forked out a club-record sum to prise Emiliano Buendia away from Norwich City as they chose not to test Shakhtar's resolve.

What has Preece said about Solomon?

Villa reporter Preece was surprised when he discovered the links to Solomon.

However, he feels the Israel international, who has won 24 caps, could prove to be a shrewd signing if he heads to Villa Park.

Preece told GIVEMESPORT: "It's an interesting link, obviously. He fits the brief because Villa want young players.

"He is coming into his pomp, as it were, and he's got a decent goals record and assists return as well.

"He does fit the brief but I haven't seen anything concrete on that yet.

"Being linked with a winger like Solomon did surprise me, to be honest, so we'll see where that goes."

How has Solomon performed so far this season?

Solomon, who is valued at £18million by Transfermarkt, has failed to feature in just one Ukrainian top flight fixture this term and bagged a solitary goal.

The winger has been involved 14 times in all competitions for Shakhtar this season and is quickly closing in on 100 appearances for the club.

He has been in fine form at international level and started all five Israel fixtures since the campaign got underway, scoring a goal and grabbing two assists in the process.
