Liverpool and Chelsea are both pursuing Barcelona striker David Villa, it has been sensationally claimed.

The Spaniard has netted seven times in in 17 appearances for Barca this term and has frequently been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp.

And, according to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, both Liverpool and Chelsea have made respective approaches for Villa in the past week.

It is claimed representatives from both Anfield and Stamford Bridge have been in contact with the Catalan giants regarding the potential availability of Villa.

However, whether or not Liverpool or Chelsea decide to formalise their alleged interest in January remains unclear, but signing the 29-year-old would represent a significant coup for either club.

Although it would come as a surprise of sorts if Liverpool or Chelsea decided to break the bank to sign Villa, both clubs are known to be keen to invest heavily before FIFA's new financial regulations come into play.

Liverpool demonstrated just that by backing Dalglish with almost £60 million during the summer, while Villas-Boas spent close to £75 million on new Chelsea recruits.
