Newcastle transfer news: Magpies warned over 'good signing' with 51 EPL goals

Journalist Chris Waugh reckons that Alexandre Lacazette would be a good signing for Newcastle.

The Frenchman, who's scored 197 goals across his club career, is currently in his fifth season in English football following his £46.5m move from Lyon back in 2017 but is out of contract next summer and would be available on a free transfer.

What's the latest news with Lacazette?

Despite Arsenal seemingly being happy to let the striker's contract in north London run down, he remains an important player for Mikel Arteta's side and came off the bench to rescue a last-gasp point against Crystal Palace on Monday.

But the 30-year-old, who's scored 51 Premier League goals in his Gunners career, has seen game-time extremely hard to come by this season, with captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang establishing himself as the first-choice striker once again after playing on the left for much of the last few years.

Lacazette has shown his ability to score goals at this level, though. In just 185 minutes of action in all competitions this season, he's found the net three times, which is more than anyone else at Arsenal besides Aubameyang (6).

And according to reports in Spain, Newcastle are interested in giving Lacazette a Premier League lifeline and pushing for a January move, where he's likely to be available at a cut-price.

The Magpies already have Callum Wilson as their number nine, but Waugh wouldn't be against the French international moving to St James' Park.

What did Waugh say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "James Tarkowski fits the bill rather than some of the other names we've seen linked.

"I actually think Alexandre Lacazette would be a good signing, but those sort of players that are older and just because they're on the fringes of a big-six squad, they need to look at players that are motivated to play for Newcastle and want to progress."

Do Newcastle need Lacazette?

Right now, Newcastle have far bigger areas they must improve than up front. When you take a quick look through the current squad, Callum Wilson is one of the few players - along with Joe Willock and Allan Saint-Maximin - that you can see being a part of the new regime in the coming years.

However, if someone with Lacazette's quality becomes available, especially for cheap, it would be hard for the hierarchy to turn it down. Getting Wilson and Lacazette into the same team would prove a difficult task, but the Frenchman, who according to Football.London has asked his agent to find him a new club, would definitely improve the squad.
